Mustafa Abdul Latif Mushtat al-Ghraibi, known as Mustafa al-Kadhimi, is an independent Iraqi politician born in the Kadhimiyah district of Baghdad in the mid-1960s. He served as the Prime Minister of Iraq from 7 May 2020 to 27 October 2022, following his tenure as Director of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service from 7 June 2016 to 26 June 2022.

Al-Kadhimi hails from the al-Ghraibi tribe in the Al-Hai district of Wasit Governorate and is the son of Abdul Latif Mushtat al-Ghraibi, a prominent political and social figure in the region. Before leaving Iraq in 1985, he studied electrical engineering at the University of Technology in Baghdad. He later obtained a bachelor's degree in law from Al-Turath Private College in 2012.

A staunch opponent of Saddam Hussein’s regime and the Ba'ath Party, Al-Kadhimi was forced into exile due to security threats. From 1985 to 2003, he lived abroad, residing in several countries while working as a journalist and human rights activist. After the fall of the former regime, he returned to Baghdad and briefly worked for the Iraqi Media Network before leading the Iraqi Memory Foundation from 2003 to 2007. In this role, he became one of the earliest documenters of Iraq’s dictatorial era and its human rights violations.

In 2020, following widespread protests and the resignation of Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, Al-Kadhimi was entrusted with forming a government to guide Iraq through a critical transitional period. His government achieved significant milestones, including restoring security, conducting transparent elections, rebalancing Iraq’s foreign relations, and increasing the country’s financial reserves to over $96 billion.
